How Can I Clean Bat Feces from My Attic?
If you have recently discovered that a colony of bats has been living inside your attic, then you have our condolences. These are disgusting animals. They sleep upside down, letting their urine and feces dropped to the floor beneath them. If they had been inside your attic for an extended period of time and there are at least 30 or 40 bats, it is unimaginable the amount of waste on your insulation, books, pictures, and other memorabilia you may have. Of greater concern is the fact that these animals carry a number of diseases and parasites. This is often part of their feces, meaning that coming in contact with it or even breathing in the dried particles puts your health at risk. It is an ungodly mess to say the least. So how do you clean that up from your attic?

Be Safe First
Before attempting to clean, the first step you need to perform is to protect yourself. These particles can easily attach to your skin or get into your airway. That means you need to guard yourself before you begin any cleaning. To be on the safe side, cover all exposed skin. You should be wearing long pants and a long-sleeved shirt. Put on heavy duty gloves and boots. You even need a surgical mask and goggles to protect your airway.

Don't Sweep the Debris
Most people will try to sweep all of the feces into a dustpan. A very bad idea. As mentioned, these particles can become airborne as they dry. By sweeping, you are actually helping to put more of this matter into the air. Instead, use a vacuum that has a canned cylinder that captures the debris. Don't use a vacuum with the bag. Often, particles go right to the bag and back into the air. With a self containing canister, far less particles are likely to become airborne, protecting your airway. All matter retrieved in the vacuum should be dumped into a garbage bag and that garbage bag should be double knotted. You should also then place that inside another garbage bag and double knot that close as well. This should keep the particles from getting out.

Scrub Away the Mess
After you have removed all debris, it is time to start scrubbing. You want to create a solution that contains either ammonia or bleach. Add one of these products to a solution of hot water, hydrogen peroxide, and dish soap. Don't mix ammonia and bleach, however. This is dangerous to your airway. Scrub the affected area with the solution. Let it dry, and then do it again. This should be done at least three times to ensure that you kill off all pathogens that exist in the waste. If any of the insulation or memorabilia in the attic has bat urine or feces on it, you will need to throw it away. This is very difficult to clean, and you are putting yourself at risk by using it again. It's understandable that these memories mean a lot to you, but your health should mean more.
